Re-elect Simon Gibson
Abbotsford City Council

Priorities

Maintaining well-managed budgeting

Monitoring budgets closely so rates are sensitive to taxpayers while providing the necessary municipal services.

Our seniors

A particular interest in serving seniors who built our community.

Young people & young families

Sixteen years teaching university gave Simon a firsthand understanding of the financial challenges students and young families face today.

Safe communities

Supporting our police department as they fight crime to ensure that Abbotsford is truly a city in which our citizens feel safe and protected in their homes and neighborhoods.

Sumas Prairie flooding

Working assertively with the provincial and federal governments to secure the funding we need to avoid future flooding on Sumas Prairie.

Agriculture

Abbotsford is one of the most important agricultural communities in Canada. Simon continues to support our farmers and views policies through a lens that is sensitive to their needs from the city.

Homelessness, addictions & mental health

Working with the provincial government so these unhoused people receive the attention and care they deserve in order to provide a tranquil and welcoming environment for our general public.

Every corner of Abbotsford

A short tour of the communities that make our city what it is.

A message from Simon

Thank you for visiting my website. Your interest in the campaign is much appreciated. As you may know, this will be a competitive election with many candidates seeking seats on our city council.

Your support is much appreciated and I can commit to continue being a strong representative over the next four-year term.

My experience will allow me to stand for fiscal management and support of our traditional civic services such as police, fire, roads, parks, water, sewer, recycling and transit.

In general, I would prefer we do not become too active in arts and culture, for example—as important as they are—because we need to be cautious in adding new services that can best be funded by senior levels of government.

I continue to be disappointed with the provincial and federal governments' lack of support for our serious flooding issues on Sumas Prairie. We need their financial commitment to allow us to provide security for residents, especially those in the agricultural sector. I will be a strong advocate for an overall flood mitigation plan.

The serious challenges facing many of our residents who struggle with addictions and mental illness—leading to homelessness—require significant attention, especially from the province, which has the main responsibility for social services.

Residents frequently tell me how upset they are with the homeless camps, especially those that are very visible to those passing through our beautiful city. I acknowledge this will not be an easy issue to resolve, but I do feel we need to continue to work with the province to provide the requisite medical care and addiction programming that is needed.

Some of our traffic arteries are becoming quite congested, especially during the morning and evening commutes. I will be supporting a traffic plan which will address the issue. Functional traffic circulation will be essential for the safety and convenience of residents.

Sumas Mountain is a wonderful asset to our community and the park and many trails are valued by hikers, mountain cyclists and naturalists. I understand there is a significant population of bear, deer, cougar, bobcat and even elk. I commit to protecting our park in perpetuity for future generations of Abbotsford residents.

I look forward to speaking with you over the coming weeks leading up to the election on October 17. Contact me at any time.

Please drop by again. I'll be adding more information for your interest.
